Tangut Ideograph 171C1

450/6136

Enter 𗇁 with a Unicode character map or Tangut input method; standard keyboards have no dedicated key. It is a Tangut character, from the historical language of Western Xia (Xixia), and Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary indexes it as “fortune.” Without a Tangut-capable font, some apps show a blank box.

What 𗇁 means

Use a Unicode character map or Tangut input method.

An ordinary keyboard layout has no dedicated key for this Tangut character. A Unicode character map lets you select it; a Tangut input method provides script-specific entry. The app displaying it also needs a font with Tangut coverage.

A box or blank space means the font cannot show the graph; it does not mean the text has changed.

What does 𗇁 mean?

Li Fanwen’s English index places 𗇁 under “fortune.”

In Li Fanwen’s 2008 Tangut dictionary, entry 3812 appears under “fortune”; Unicode maps 𗇁 to that entry. “Fortune” is a useful English gloss, though a dictionary gloss cannot settle every nuance of an old passage.

Where did 𗇁 come from?

𗇁 belongs to the Tangut script developed for Western Xia.

Developed in the eleventh century for writing the Tangut language, the script gave Western Xia an official written medium and marked its political independence. Tangut also carried Buddhist texts and Chinese works translated for Tangut readers. Its square forms drew on Chinese writing traditions while serving a distinct language.

The graph is cited in two 12th century Tangut reference works: Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”).

Specialist and historical: it fits Tangut studies, manuscripts, and historical texts.

Without a Tangut-capable font, the recipient may see a blank box instead of the graph.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𗇁 show as a box?

A font issue is the likely cause. An app without Tangut coverage can show an empty box even when the text contains the correct character.

Is 𗇁 Chinese?

No. 𗇁 writes Tangut, a distinct historical language. The Tangut script drew on Chinese writing traditions, but the two scripts and languages are not interchangeable.
