What 𗇊 means
No secure one-word English gloss is established as of 2026.
Reference works list scholarly reconstructions of the old Tangut reading; these are estimates of sound, not English translations. The Tangut script was created in 1036 for Western Xia state-building, with translating a Buddhist canon into Tangut as a major goal. The Tangut work Tóngyīn (“Homophones”) attests 𗇊 in the 12th century. Tangut texts also served medical, legal, and literary needs. Original Tangut sources draw the component’s first stroke horizontally; the Unicode 9.0 chart slants it.
