What 𗇽 means
Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “ancestor.”
Tangut is a distinct script, though some forms resemble Chinese characters. Scholars reconstruct this character’s pronunciation in different ways.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It served Western Xia government and Buddhist translation.
Tangut writing, also called the Xixia script, developed around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor. It drew on Chinese writing and the neighboring Khitan people’s script while remaining distinct. 𗇽 appears in two 12th-century reference works, “Sea of Writing” and “Homophones.” Tangut writing outlasted Western Xia, then fell out of use.
Historical-literary rather than conversational.
Sent without context, it can look like an unfamiliar sign. Add Tangut context when its historical meaning matters.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗇽 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
