What 𗈐 means
𗈐 can mean “not” or “nothing” in Tangut.
The character is glossed both ways; the words around it help decide which English translation fits. Tangut was the language of the Western Xia kingdom.
Without surrounding Tangut words, a lone message does not tell you which gloss the sender intends. Ask whether it is a quotation or a sample of the script.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served the Western Xia state and its religious and cultural work.
Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036 as part of building the Western Xia state. A key purpose is thought to have been enabling a Tangut edition of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures; the script also expressed the kingdom’s distinct identity.
Tangut writing drew visual and structural ideas from Chinese script, and its creation followed the earlier example of the neighboring Khitan scripts. Two Tangut reference books, 文海 (“Sea of Writing”) and 同音 (“Homophones”), record 𗈐 in the 12th century; a surviving inscription is dated 1502.
Historical and specialist; in casual chat it reads as a deliberate Tangut reference.
Don’t take a lone 𗈐 as an everyday “no”; its Tangut glosses are broader.

Questions people ask
2Why does 𗈐 show as a box?
The app or font may not have a Tangut glyph available, so it substitutes a box. A font with Tangut support can display the character.
Is 𗈐 a Chinese character?
No. It belongs to the Tangut writing system, which drew on Chinese and Khitan models but was made for the Tangut language.
