What 𗈕 means

A Tangut verb glossed “to braise.”

Why was Tangut created?

It gave Western Xia a script for Tangut state and religious life.

Emperor Li Yuanhao commissioned it about 1036 CE for state writing, Buddhist texts, and translations.

It may have helped the kingdom distinguish itself from Song China. Chinese writing shaped Tangut's design; Khitan scripts from about a century earlier offered a precedent.

A Khara-khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves a Tangut translation of a Chinese work. Tangut remained in use under Yuan and Ming rule, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Historical and specialist outside Tangut context.
