Tangut character 𗈽

574/6136

𗈽 is a Tangut character whose best-supported English gloss is “dirty.” Tangut, also called Xixia, was a historic script for a language spoken in what is now northwest China. Its script outlasted the Western Xia state, and the character’s pronunciation is reconstructed from historical evidence.

What 𗈽 means

“Dirty” is the best-supported English gloss. Several sources reconstruct the reading as *pe¹; another system writes *¹pi₁. The leading asterisk marks an inferred pronunciation, and the superscripts are scholarly tone notation.

Tangut was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 and served the empire’s official and cultural life. The earliest transmitted Tangut document identified in scholarship is dated 1072; that does not establish when 𗈽 itself first appeared. Tangut characters resemble Chinese characters, but this is a separate script.

Two 12th-century Tangut dictionaries record the character: Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”). After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, the script continued under Yuan and Ming rule and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.

This is a historical Tangut character; one English gloss cannot tell you how it works in a full sentence.

Read “dirty” as a dictionary gloss for 𗈽; surrounding Tangut text still determines the sentence.

Why is 𗈽 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
