What 𗉲 means

Its reconstructed reading does not settle its English sense.

𗉲 belongs to the Tangut character-based writing system used by Western Xia. Two Tangut dictionaries from the 12th century—Wénhǎi (“Sea of Writing”) and Tóngyīn (“Homophones”)—record this exact character. Their entries let scholars reconstruct its pronunciation.

Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?

It served the Western Xia state and Tangut literary life.

In 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered Tangut writing as part of state-building. Its purposes included a collection of Buddhist scriptures in Tangut and a written identity distinct from Song China.

Chinese characters provided the main model for how Tangut signs looked and were built; Khitan scripts were another writing tradition in the region. Tangut and Chinese are separate, mutually unreadable scripts, so knowing one does not let you read the other.

What does 𗉲 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as a script reference unless context supplies a translation.

After Western Xia fell, Tangut continued in texts from the Yuan and Ming periods before becoming obsolete.

As of 2026, dictionaries, fonts, and research tools support Tangut study, but it is no longer an everyday community language. If a Tangut text is not part of the conversation, treat a lone 𗉲 as a script sample and ask what word or passage the sender has in mind.

Historical and specialist; in ordinary chat it reads as a Tangut script sample, not shared shorthand.

Tangut and Chinese are separate, mutually unreadable scripts; Chinese characters do not decode this one.
