tangut ideograph-173a5

Tangut character 𗎥

934/6136

To enter 𗎥 in source code, use a Unicode escape: a short notation that inserts a character by its number. Tangut (Xixia) is the script used for the Tangut language of the Western Xia state; 𗎥 appears in the Wén Hǎi, a dictionary that groups characters by sound. Its Unicode name is an inventory label, not a translation.

What 𗎥 means

Use a Unicode escape in a source-code string.

JavaScript accepts \u{173A5}; Python or C can use \U000173A5 where that language accepts Unicode escapes.

What does 𗎥 mean?

Its Unicode label identifies the character, not its word meaning.

Unicode constructs Tangut ideograph names from code points, so “Tangut Ideograph-173A5” identifies this character. The English-language Tangut reference entry for 𗎥 has no gloss as of 2026; a translated dictionary entry or the surrounding Tangut sentence is needed to determine its word meaning.

How did Tangut writing begin?

The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first ruler around 1036.

It wrote Tangut, a distinct language, for the state’s administrative and cultural life, including Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan and Chinese classics. Chinese writing influenced Tangut character structure, but the two scripts write different languages.

The Wén Hǎi (Sea of Writing), a mid-12th-century Tangut rhyme dictionary that groups characters by sound, lists 𗎥 at position 19.261. After 1227, Buddhist texts kept Tangut writing in use through the Yuan and Ming dynasties; it was obsolete by the end of the Ming.

Historical and scholarly; read it as Tangut with a translation or language context.

Do not infer a Chinese word from its shape.

Questions people ask

3

Can Chinese readers read 𗎥?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate language; knowing Chinese does not supply this character’s Tangut reading or meaning.

Why does 𗎥 appear as a square?

The app probably has no available font with this Tangut glyph. The empty square is a placeholder shown when no font can draw the character; the underlying text still contains 𗎥.

Can I work out 𗎥’s meaning from its components?

No. The parts help describe and index Tangut character shapes, but this character’s component breakdown does not supply its word meaning.
