Tangut Character 173BB

956/6136

Text symbol

What 𗎻 means

It is glossed as 伏: crouch, hide, or submit.

A Tangut dictionary index matches 𗎻 to Chinese 伏. Depending on the sentence, the gloss points to physical crouching or lying low, hiding, or submission.

The Unicode-style label follows a numbering pattern for Tangut characters. It identifies the entry; a Tangut dictionary, not the label, supplies the lexical clue.

Is 𗎻 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to the separate Tangut script.

Tangut writing drew on Chinese writing's visual and compositional principles, but the two scripts are distinct. Here, 伏 is a Chinese dictionary gloss for 𗎻, not a replacement character.

A reader familiar with Chinese may recognize 伏 but still cannot read 𗎻 as Chinese.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It supported Western Xia state-building and Buddhist scriptures.

Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the Tangut script as Western Xia built a written identity and produced Buddhist scriptures in Tangut. Neighboring Khitan rulers had already created scripts of their own.

Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scripture, official, private, and religious records, plus translations of Confucian, military, and literary works. The script continued under Yuan and Ming rule after Western Xia fell, then became obsolete.

Historical and specialist: it belongs in discussion of Tangut language, script history, or character encoding.

Do not substitute Chinese 伏; it is the gloss, not the same character.

Why does 𗎻 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
