Tangut character 173BC

957/6136

𗎼 is a Tangut character with a historical Chinese gloss of “still” or “yet.” The Xixia (Western Xia) state used Tangut writing for government and translated texts. Treat the gloss as a clue to an old word, not a ready-made modern message.

What 𗎼 means

A cautious gloss is “still” or “yet.”

A Tangut reference table pairs 𗎼 with the Chinese word 仍, glossed as “still” or “yet.” That is a clue to an old Tangut word, not permission to replace it with modern Chinese 仍; context decides which English sense fits.

The pairing is a translation clue, not a pronunciation guide or a full definition of the historical Tangut word.

Why did Western Xia create Tangut writing?

It became the state writing system of Western Xia.

Ruler Li Yuanhao ordered its creation; scholar Yeli Renrong developed it with others. In 1036 it became the official writing system of the Tangut-led Western Xia state, serving government and marking a cultural distinction from Song China.

Manuscripts from Khara-Khoto, a ruined settlement, preserve Buddhist scriptures, Chinese classics, dialogues and translations. The script drew on Chinese character structure; neighboring Khitan and Jurchen states devised scripts for similar state-building aims. After Western Xia fell, everyday transmission faded, leaving manuscripts and dictionaries for later study.

Can I send 𗎼 by itself?

Only when the Tangut context is clear.

In a manuscript sample, Tangut lesson or discussion of historical writing, one character has a clear subject. In an ordinary message, a recipient unfamiliar with Tangut may not recognize the intended “still/yet” gloss from 𗎼 alone.

If it appears as a box, the font likely lacks Tangut coverage; that is a display fallback, not a different character.

Historical and specialist: suited to Tangut study, manuscripts and typography; opaque without context.

A Chinese gloss does not make 𗎼 interchangeable with Chinese 仍.
