What 𗏺 means

It is a Tangut character whose meaning depends on its use.

A manuscript from Khara-Khoto dated 1190 uses 𗏺 as a phonetic loan of 𗏣: the writer uses it for that character’s sound rather than its usual meaning.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 under Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao to support state-building, including a Buddhist canon and a distinct political identity.

Why can 𗏺 have different translations?

Its role depends on the grammatical analysis and sentence.

An older dictionary tradition, discussed in a 2024 history of Tangut lexicography, treated it as a future marker before a verb. A 2025 grammar discussion groups it with prefixes associated with desire or wish and notes a possible directional force.

Read the surrounding verb phrase before assigning a meaning: the character alone cannot settle whether it marks future time, desire, or a borrowed sound. A reader unfamiliar with Tangut may see an opaque sign; a specialist can identify its phonetic or grammatical role.

Why does 𗏺 show as a box?

The code point is valid; a font may lack the glyph.

Tangut needs a font that covers the script. If neither a web font nor an installed system font includes the character, a browser or app may show an empty box or another fallback mark. A Tangut web font can supply it in a browser; other apps need an installed Tangut font. The display does not change the character’s identity.

Specialist and archival: its role belongs to Tangut texts and grammatical analysis.

Don’t translate it as “future” unless the surrounding grammar supports that reading.

Questions people ask

1

Does 𗏺 always mean future?

No. One dictionary tradition analyzes it as a future marker, but manuscript use also attests it as a sound-based substitute; another grammar discussion links it to desire or wish.
