What 𗓊 means
Its dictionary gloss is “watch” or “peek at.”
A Tangut–Chinese dictionary index pairs this entry with Chinese 覘, meaning roughly “peek at” or “observe.” This is a translation clue, not a Chinese spelling of 𗓊.
The script was made for Tangut, the language of the Western Xia (Xixia) state, and promulgated in 1036–1037. It served official records and translations of Chinese classics and Buddhist texts. Scholarship discusses an official document from 1072 as the earliest surviving example. Its design drew on Chinese models; a link to Khitan-Liao writing remains a hypothesis. Tangut inscriptions continued into the Yuan and Ming dynasties.
