Tangut character 𗓋

1228/6136

A desktop Unicode hex input method is the practical way to enter 𗓋; mobile keyboards need Tangut support. Tangut dictionaries gloss it as “go,” while its Unicode name identifies the encoded sign but does not translate the word. It belongs to historical Tangut writing.

What 𗓋 means

Use a Unicode hexadecimal input method on desktop.

A hexadecimal value is a code written with digits and letters. As of 2026, Windows Word or Outlook accepts it followed by AltX; Linux apps built with GTK, a common app toolkit, use CtrlShiftU, then the value and Space or Enter. As of 2026, macOS Unicode Hex Input accepts four hex digits, so use Character Viewer, its built-in character search, for this five-digit value. As of 2026, iOS and Android have no official hexadecimal entry method; use a third-party keyboard that includes Tangut.

What does 𗓋 mean?

In Tangut, 𗓋 is glossed “go.”

Unicode generates the name from the character’s assigned number. That identifies the encoded sign but does not translate the Tangut word. A dictionary gloss supplies the meaning the Unicode label leaves out.

When did Tangut writing begin?

The Tangut writing system was commissioned in 1036.

Western Xia was a medieval Tangut state; its court commissioned a native script for government writing and to express a distinct Tangut identity. The earliest transmitted dated document is from 1072. Tangut writing carried state records, Buddhist scripture, Chinese classics, military works and secular texts. It continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; an inscription from 1502 is later evidence.

The Tangut script followed Chinese character-making principles and developed alongside Khitan writing. That is a historical connection at the script level; it does not make 𗓋 a Chinese or Khitan character.

Scholarly and archival; in everyday chat, it reads as a sample of a historical script.

A box for 𗓋 means the font cannot display this Tangut glyph; the character itself has not changed.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗓋 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
