Tangut ideograph 174CC

1229/6136

In a Buddhist dhāraṇī (a protective chant), 𗓌 is romanized as mja in one Tangut transcription of Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. The script was commissioned in the 1030s to write Tangut for the Western Xia state in northwestern China; it took design cues from Chinese characters and followed earlier scripts of the neighboring Khitan people. It served official writing, Buddhist scriptures and translated works; a Tangut Buddhist inscription is dated 1502.

Why does 𗓌 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
