𗓒 is a character in the Tangut script, the historical writing system of the Tangut language. Its Unicode name does not tell you its word or reading; a Tangut lexicon is needed. It belongs mainly in historical, linguistic, or typography work, and displaying it requires a Tangut-capable font.

What 𗓒 means

Its word and reading require a Tangut lexicon.

𗓒 is a Tangut character in the historical writing system of the Tangut language. The script was created in 1036 under the first emperor of Western Xia. It supported a Tangut translation of Buddhist scriptures and marked an identity distinct from Song China.

Use a Tangut lexicon to identify this character’s word and reading: its Unicode name is an identifier, not a translation. Tangut writing appeared in official and private texts, Buddhist scriptures, inscriptions, and manuscripts. It continued under Yuan and Ming rule, then fell out of use by the end of the Ming period.

Is Tangut Chinese?

No; Tangut and Chinese are distinct scripts.

Tangut characters drew on Chinese writing’s visual style and character-building principles, but Tangut is a separate script for a different language. A Chinese-like shape shows historical influence; it does not supply a Chinese reading.

The Tangut script also followed an earlier Khitan example of using a native script. Surviving Tangut texts include Buddhist scriptures, legal and official writing, and translations of Chinese and Tibetan works.

How do I type Tangut?

Use a Tangut input method and a font that supports the script.

As of 2026, Rime Xunpin accepts scholarly reconstructions of Tangut readings typed in Latin letters with tone marks, as well as stroke input and four-corner codes. A four-corner code identifies a character from the shapes assigned to its four corners.

As of 2026, a Tangut-capable font is needed for 𗓒 to display as a glyph; without one, the text may appear as a missing-glyph box.

Historical and specialist: it signals a reference to Tangut writing, language study, or typography.

Its Chinese-influenced shape does not give it a Chinese reading.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗓒 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
