What 𗔝 means

Use a Tangut input method or a Unicode character picker. A Unicode picker accepts the hexadecimal value 1751D, though keystrokes vary by app. A Tangut input method (IME) may find the character by reconstructed reading, dictionary number, strokes or components, or a four-corner code that indexes characters by their corner shapes.

As of 2026, public Tangut tools document Rime-based and browser input. The character may still show as a square box if the app has no font with Tangut glyphs.

What does 𗔝 mean?

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “a transliteration.” That is a sign used to write the sound of a word from another language in Tangut. A 2008 Tangut–Chinese dictionary also gives the reconstructed reading kiew²; this scholarly sound notation is not an English translation.

The Tangut script was made for the Western Xia kingdom under Emperor Li Yuanhao as part of a state-building project. Its makers followed neighboring Khitan peoples, who had created scripts for their own languages. Tangut writing was inspired by Chinese forms and composition principles, but it did not descend from Chinese writing.

The script served official and religious writing, including Buddhist texts, and translations from Chinese and Tibetan. A manuscript fragment found at Khara-Khoto, a ruined site in Inner Mongolia, is probably from the 12th or early 13th century; it translates a Chinese secular text.

Is 𗔝 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script. Tangut characters were inspired by Chinese writing but belong to their own writing system; shared square layouts do not make them the same characters.

Historical Tangut was written in vertical columns from top to bottom and right to left. Modern editions may use horizontal lines from left to right; the layout changes, not the character.

kiew² is its reconstructed reading, not its translation.
