What 𗔽 means

A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “surname.”

In 1036, the Western Xia state ordered the creation of Tangut script as part of state-building, including a Buddhist canon and a distinct identity. The script drew on Chinese writing but was separate; its creation also followed the earlier Khitan precedent of a state making its own script.

A manuscript fragment from ruined Khara-khoto contains Tangut text in a translated, nonreligious work; it probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗔽 appear as a box?

It is a font issue. Tangut characters need a font that supports them; without one, 𗔽 can appear as a missing-glyph box. The box adds no meaning.
