Tangut character 𗕟

1376/6136

In a Tangut dictionary, 𗕟 is glossed as a roofed shelter, such as a shed or canopy. It belongs to the writing system used by the Western Xia state. Its Chinese gloss 棚 gives the sense, not a Tangut pronunciation.

Text symbol

What 𗕟 means

It means a simple shelter, with shed or canopy as likely glosses.

Li Fanwen’s Tangut–Chinese dictionary index lists 𗕟 at L1436 and pairs it with 棚, a Chinese word for a simple shelter or canopy. An index to Gerard Clauson’s Skeleton Tangut, a Tangut character reference, lists it as entry 207 on folio 18.

The Chinese character is a gloss for the meaning, not the sound of 𗕟 in Tangut.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It gave the Western Xia state writing for its own language.

Around 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao introduced Tangut writing to support government, cultural identity, and translation. Chinese and Khitan writing traditions influenced its design, but it represented the distinct Tangut language.

Buddhist scriptures were a major translation project; surviving Tangut materials also include legal texts, Confucian works, and Chinese texts translated into Tangut. The last known Tangut inscription is dated 1502.

Is 𗕟 a Chinese character?

No. It is a Tangut graph, not a Chinese character.

Tangut is a separate language and script. Readers familiar with Chinese may recognize the design influence without being able to read 𗕟 as a Chinese graph.

Unicode’s Tangut chart places 𗕟 at radical 79, entry 79.13, and associates it with 𘡎 (R0079). This is a structural lookup relationship, not an alternate spelling. Without a Tangut-capable font, the glyph may appear blank or as a missing-character box; that affects display, not the character’s identity.

Historical or scholarly: it identifies Tangut-language material, not ordinary Chinese writing.

Chinese-inspired strokes do not make it a Chinese character.

1

Why does 𗕟 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
