tangut ideograph-1756a

Tangut character for woman

1387/6136

𗕪 means “woman” in Tangut, the language of the Western Xia state. The court established Tangut script around 1036–37 for state records; the script’s earliest surviving example is a document from 1072. Tangut writing took cues from Chinese writing; possible influence from Khitan writing is debated. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut Buddhist texts continued under the Yuan. This is a historical character, not a chat emoji.

What 𗕪 means

No. Alone, it means “woman” or “female.”

A Tangut translation of the Buddhist scripture Huayan Sutra uses it in a phrase for “brothers and sisters.” There, it contributes “woman”; the phrase as a whole supplies the family meaning.
