What 𗕲 means
It is a Tangut character; its Unicode label is not a translation.
The label “Tangut Ideograph-17572” names the encoded character, not its Tangut meaning. Tangut wrote the now-extinct Tangut language, and a reliable English gloss for 𗕲 depends on a dictionary entry or the sentence where it occurs.
The glyph is a head character—an entry heading—in The Sea of Writing, a Tangut dictionary arranged by rhyme. It also appears in an index to a separate historical Tangut dictionary.
Why was the Tangut script created?
To write Tangut and support Western Xia’s state and religion.
Under Emperor Li Yuanhao, the Western Xia state created the script around 1036. A native writing system supported government and a distinct political identity; it was used for official documents, diplomacy, legal texts, translated classics, and a Tangut Buddhist canon.
The script drew visual inspiration from Chinese writing. Its state-building context also belongs to a region where neighboring Khitan polities had already developed state scripts. These are connections between writing traditions, not a claim about the design of this individual character.
What happened to Tangut writing after Western Xia?
It continued after the state fell in 1227.
Tangut writing continued in Yuan- and Ming-period texts, especially Buddhist works. Its role shifted from official state writing to preserving and transmitting manuscripts, sutras, inscriptions, and related texts.
Scholars rediscovered Tangut texts in the late 19th century, and work in the early 20th century largely deciphered the script. Its surviving texts are studied as historical Tangut writing.
An archival, scholarly character suited to discussions of Tangut texts, language history, and Unicode.
