What 𗖢 means

It is the Tangut character glossed “to weave.”

The reconstructed Tangut reading for 𗖢 is nai², roughly like “nigh.” The raised ² marks tone in this scholarly reconstruction; it is not part of the character.

Traditional histories date the creation of Tangut script to 1036. It was designed for the Tangut language and used in schools, government documents, and printed Buddhist works in translation. Writing continued after the Western Xia state fell and remained in use during the Yuan period. An inscription on a Buddhist stone monument dated 1502 is cited as the latest datable specimen. Encoded Tangut characters let modern scholars quote, search, and typeset historical texts.

How do I type 𗖢?

Tangut input tools offer code, handwriting, or component lookup.

Tangut IME Online also accepts RIME dictionary files: dict.yaml files map input codes to candidate characters. As documented on 2026-09-16, its code mode has no built-in dictionary, so load a file before using code entry.

If 𗖢 shows as a box on your phone, the app may lack a Tangut font. As of 2026-09-16, Tangut IME Online warned that some mobile apps might not display entered Tangut text. The character remains the same Unicode text; a font with Tangut coverage can make it visible if the app uses that font.

Is 𗖢 Chinese?

No. It belongs to Tangut script, not Chinese writing.

Tangut and Chinese writing use similarly square, brush-shaped characters, so the scripts can look related at a glance. Tangut is a separate writing system for the Tangut language, with its own way of building characters.

A character’s visible parts can help an input tool identify it, but they do not combine into a word-by-word translation of this glyph.

Historical and scholarly; it reads as a writing-system character, not a casual chat mark.

A box on screen points to font coverage, not a different character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗖢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
