Tangut Character 𗖰

1457/6136

𗖰 is a Tangut character with a recorded reading; with 𗚩 it forms part of a documented word for a Buddhist scripture. Tangut writing was created in 1036 for the Western Xia state and Buddhist translation, drawing on Chinese writing and the Khitan people’s script while remaining distinct. Its use continued after the state’s fall in 1227; the latest known inscription is dated 1502.

What 𗖰 means

A 2008 Tangut dictionary records its reading as *lwər². This is scholarly notation in Latin letters. The pair 𗖰𗚩 is glossed “sutra,” a Buddhist scripture; 𗖰 alone is not.

Why does 𗖰 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is 𗖰 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
