What 𗘍 means
In Tangut, it means “to be blue-green.”
A recorded Tangut form, 𗘍𘓲, repeats part of the word: 𘓲 completes a partial reduplication, so it is not an alternate spelling for 𗘍 alone. In a separate phrase, 𗘍𗴂 is read “blue-green and white”; 𗴂 is the Tangut character for white.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It served a state, literary, and religious program.
Western Xia’s emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036 as part of an effort to build the state and produce a Tangut Buddhist canon.
Surviving Tangut works include Buddhist and secular translations. A Buddhist print from Khara-Khoto dates to the late 12th century, and Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227. The script drew visual inspiration from Chinese writing while remaining distinct.
What does 𗘍 mean when someone sends it?
Treat a lone send as a reference to Tangut writing.
Knowing its gloss tells you the word, not why someone sent it; the surrounding conversation supplies that context.
Its displayed outline depends on the font. Without Tangut font support, the valid character may appear as an empty box.
Historical and specialist; it fits discussion of Tangut texts, language, or typography.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗘍 show as a box?
Usually, the device lacks a Tangut-capable font. In 2026, some mobile apps still fail to render Tangut even when the text is valid; an app with Tangut font support should display it.
