Tangut Surname Character

A Tangut dictionary lists 𗘢 as a surname. Tangut is the language written with this historical script. Alone, it gives little clue why it was sent; ask for context. Its display depends on font support.

Text symbol

What 𗘢 means

It represents a Tangut family name.

Why was Tangut writing created?

It served Western Xia and Buddhist scripture.

In 1036, Western Xia’s first ruler, Li Yuanhao, ordered it into use to support a distinct state identity.

The Tangut script is distinct from Chinese writing. A Khara-Khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves a Tangut translation of a Chinese text. Secular books survive; later sources are mostly Buddhist, including works beyond Western Xia.

Why does 𗘢 show as a box?

Your font may lack Tangut coverage.

The text may contain the character even when the app cannot draw its glyph.

1

Why does 𗘢 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
