What 𗙏 means
It means “sound” or “noise” in Tangut.
Tangut was the language written with this script in the Western Xia state of northwestern China.
Why was the Tangut script created?
It gave the Western Xia state a script for Tangut and its books.
Introduced in 1036 under Emperor Li Yuanhao, the script supported state-building and a distinct Tangut identity. Its characters were inspired by Chinese writing, but the Tangut script did not descend from it. Tangut texts included a Buddhist canon and translations of Chinese religious and secular works.
𗙏 also begins the Tangut title of Homophones, a 12th-century reference book that groups characters by pronunciation. A manuscript found in Khara-Khoto, a ruined city, probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century and preserves Tangut translations of short Chinese stories about conduct.
Historical and scholarly: its gloss belongs to Tangut-language texts.
Without Tangut context, the gloss “sound” is hard to infer from the glyph.

1Why does 𗙏 show as a box?
A box usually means the font lacks a Tangut glyph. A font with Tangut coverage can display it; the missing-glyph symbol does not alter the underlying character.
