Tangut Character 1768D

1678/6136

𗚍 is a Tangut character; its Unicode label does not give an English meaning. A dictionary index records the reconstructed notation *rjir, a scholarly estimate of its reading, not a translation. Tangut writing began in 1036 as a Western Xia state project and later carried Buddhist, Chinese, and Tibetan texts. In a modern message, font support determines whether the character appears.

What 𗚍 means

The Unicode label is not an English translation. A dictionary index to Li Fanwen’s Tangut dictionary gives 𗚍 the reconstructed notation *rjir. That notation is a scholarly estimate of its reading, not a gloss of its meaning.

When was Tangut writing created?

Tangut writing began as a state project for books, religion, and identity. Under Li Yuanhao, Western Xia (Xixia) created Tangut writing in 1036 as the state built its institutions and identity. One major purpose was preparing a Tangut edition of the Buddhist Canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures.

Khitan neighbors had already made scripts of their own; Tangut writing followed this regional script-making and drew on Chinese character principles without simply deriving from Chinese writing. Later texts include Buddhist scriptures, Chinese works translated into Tangut, including Confucian and military works, literature, and Tibetan translations. A manuscript from Khara-Khoto, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves Chinese court anecdotes in Tangut.

How do I type 𗚍?

Use a Tangut-aware input tool and font. The online Tangut IME offers image matching: provide handwriting or an image, and it suggests candidate characters. That helps reconstruct text when you do not already have the character as text.

The Tangut IME’s instructions, as of 2026, warn that Tangut text may fail to render in some mobile apps. The text can remain Unicode while the receiving app shows a blank or fallback box if its font lacks Tangut coverage.

As of 2026, 𗚍 is best treated in messages as specialist Tangut text or decoration; it has no established shared casual-chat meaning.

Without context, a recipient may take it for decoration or an unknown mark.

Why is 𗚍 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
