What 𗚙 means
It means “Chinese parasol tree” in Tangut.
It names a plant, not a picture of one.
Why was Tangut writing created?
To write Tangut for the Western Xia state.
Around 1036, Tangut writing entered official use for correspondence; Buddhist translations expanded its reach. Its forms draw on Chinese writing but represent another language. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Buddhist inscriptions still used Tangut, including one from 1502.
