𗚯

tangut ideograph-176af

Tangut verb for “to close”

1712/6136

𗚯 means “to close” in Tangut, the language of the Western Xia kingdom. Western Xia made the Tangut script official around 1036, a move scholars read as signaling state identity; its earliest surviving text is an official document from 1072. The script outlasted the state's fall in 1227, and a stone inscription from 1502 survives. It resembles Chinese writing but is distinct; a link to earlier Khitan writing is debated.

Why does 𗚯 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
