tangut ideograph-176b0

Tangut character 𗚰

1713/6136

𗚰 is a character in the script for the extinct Tangut language. Western Xia ordered this script around 1036 to assert state identity and translate Buddhist texts; Chinese writing shaped its design, and earlier Khitan script-making offered a precedent. After Xia fell in 1227, Buddhist Tangut texts persisted until the script became obsolete by the Ming dynasty’s end. Li Fanwen’s 2008 dictionary reconstructs *lej¹ as its sound, not its meaning.

Why does 𗚰 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
