Tangut Character 176DF

1760/6136

𗛟 is a Tangut character glossed “dragon”; one detailed analysis reads it as “dragon tree,” or longan. The Tangut script served Western Xia government and Buddhist writing, and Tangut writing continued in manuscripts and inscriptions after the state ended. A Tangut-capable font is needed to display it.

What 𗛟 means

“Dragon” is the short gloss; a detailed analysis gives “dragon tree” (longan).

A Tangut dictionary index gives the short gloss “dragon.” A character analysis calls the fuller construction “dragon tree,” meaning the longan tree. The two glosses describe the same character at different levels of detail.

The Tangut script, a separate writing system for the Tangut language, was promulgated in 1036 for Western Xia administration and Buddhist writing. Tangut writing continued in manuscripts and inscriptions through 1502, after Western Xia ended.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗛟 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
