What 𗜙 means
Li Fanwen’s dictionary gloss is “to hold.”
A provisional chart from 2012 linked it to entry 4150 (“to punish severely”). The final mapping assigns 𗜙 to 4365 and 𗜠 to 4150.
When did Tangut writing begin?
The Western Xia state introduced it in 1036.
The script served state-building and Buddhist translation, drawing on Chinese writing and neighboring Khitan scripts. Tangut texts continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; the latest known inscription dates to 1502.
A historical dictionary gloss.
“Punish severely” is the provisional entry, not 𗜙’s final gloss.

1Why does 𗜙 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
