What 𗝥 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses 𗝥 as “dark.”
The dictionary indexes it as Tangut 4117. That number is a lookup entry, not part of the character’s meaning.
As of 2026, no documented modern symbolic reading is attached to 𗝥. If it appears in a message, ask what the sender means instead of assuming it says “dark.”
Why does 𗝥 look like Chinese writing?
It was made for writing Tangut, not Chinese. The Tangut script was commissioned for the Western Xia state in 1036 to write the Tangut language. Its square shapes look Chinese-like, but the two scripts are separate and cannot be read with each other’s characters.
The earliest known Tangut document is an official military-inspector’s record dated 1072; a stone inscription from 1094 is another early example.
Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227; the latest known inscription dates to 1502. Today, a Tangut-capable font is still needed to display the encoded character.
Historical and specialist; it belongs in Tangut texts, dictionaries, or script study, not everyday chat.
A recipient may see only a missing-glyph box; it does not communicate “dark.”

Questions people ask
2Why is 𗝥 a box?
Your font cannot draw it. A missing-glyph box means Tangut font coverage is absent; the box does not replace 𗝥 or explain its meaning.
Is 𗝥 an emoji?
No. 𗝥 is a Tangut text character used in historical writing, not an emoji.
