What 𗝲 means
Li Yuanhao standardized it for Western Xia around 1036. His father Li Deming had begun developing the script. A major aim is thought to have been a Tangut Buddhist canon—a collection of scriptures—and a written identity distinct from Song China. The design drew on Chinese writing and followed the neighboring Khitans’ example, but remained distinct. It carried official, private, and religious texts through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
