Tangut Ideograph 17770

1905/6136

𗝰 is glossed as “button” in Tangut. Its script is Chinese-inspired but distinct; without a Tangut-capable font, the glyph may show as a box.

What 𗝰 means

Tangut dictionaries translate it as “button.” It is a written word, not a drawing of a fastener.

Ruler Li Yuanhao ordered the script in 1036 for state-building and a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist scriptures. Neighboring Khitan scripts, made about a century earlier, provided a model.

Tangut writing drew on Chinese visually and structurally but did not descend from it. Surviving texts include Buddhist works and translations; a Khara-Khoto manuscript, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, translates Chinese anecdotes about moral conduct.
