What 𗝯 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses it as “pear.”
Its computer label is only a code-point ID, not a translation.
Why was a separate Tangut script made?
It marked Tangut identity and supported Buddhist writing.
The script was formalized in 1036 under Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao. It drew on Chinese writing’s visual and structural principles without descending from it; neighboring Khitan kingdoms in northern China offered another model for a state script.
Surviving Tangut works include Buddhist texts and secular translations from Chinese. Pilgrims also left inscriptions at the Mogao and Yulin Buddhist cave sites near Dunhuang in northwest China.
Why does 𗝯 show as a box?
Your font may not cover Tangut.
If 𗝯 appears as an empty box, switch to a font with Tangut coverage; the character itself is still text, not missing data.

1Why does 𗝯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
