Tangut Ideograph 177AF

𗞯 is a Tangut character glossed as “odd” or “irregular.” Tangut was the script of Western Xia; Chinese 畸 gives the gloss, not this character’s Mandarin reading.

What 𗞯 means

Its dictionary gloss is “odd” or “irregular.” A Tangut dictionary pairs entry 4093 with Chinese 畸 as a meaning equivalent, not as this character’s Mandarin reading.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 for Western Xia administration and Buddhist scripture. Later texts also covered Confucian learning, military affairs, reference works, and literature. A manuscript from the Tangut site Khara-khoto probably dates to the 12th or early 13th century. Chinese and Khitan writing influenced the broader script; that does not establish either as this glyph’s direct ancestor.
