What 𗟘 means
A Tangut dictionary glosses 𗟘 as “to boil.”
Is 𗟘 a Chinese character?
No. It is Tangut, a distinct script for another language.
The Tangut script was created around 1036 under Western Xia’s first emperor to write Tangut and serve the state. The Tangut rulers also followed the neighboring Khitan state’s example of creating a native script.
Tangut characters draw on Chinese writing visually and structurally, but Tangut is a separate script. It carried government records and religious texts, including Buddhist works translated from Chinese and Tibetan. After the Western Xia fell, Tangut remained in use through the Yuan and Ming dynasties and became obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
