Tangut Character 17816

2071/6136

𗠖 is a Tangut character with a historical dictionary gloss meaning “vagina.” It belongs in Tangut-language or historical material, not as a neutral decorative mark. Its Chinese dictionary gloss is a translation clue, not evidence that the character itself is Chinese.

What 𗠖 means

It denotes an explicit anatomical term in Tangut.

An index to Tangut scholar Li Fanwen’s dictionary pairs it with 腟, a Chinese character used as a gloss and a variant of 膣 (“vagina”). It reconstructs 𗠖’s Tangut reading as ɣar: a voiced, raspy sound made at the back of the mouth, followed by an “a” vowel and an “r” sound. The Chinese character is a gloss, not proof that 𗠖 is Chinese.

The Tangut script, also called Xixia, was created for the Western Xia state around 1036. It served official writing and translations of Buddhist and Chinese works. After Western Xia fell, the script continued in religious and other texts during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, becoming obsolete by the end of the Ming. Scholars study its surviving texts.

How can I enter 𗠖?

Use a Tangut input method and a font with Tangut coverage.

Rime’s Xunpin is a Tangut input scheme with phonetic, stroke, and Four Corners (shape-code) modes. Your app also needs a font that contains Tangut glyphs. In 2026, the browser-based Tangut IME reports that some mobile apps may show Tangut text as a box.

Historical and scholarly, with an explicit anatomical gloss; it is not a neutral decorative mark.

The dictionary gloss is “vagina”; treat this as a word, not decoration.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𗠖 show as a box?

Your font or app lacks a Tangut glyph. The character can still be present as Unicode text; a Tangut-capable font may display it, and fallback fonts vary by app.

Is 𗠖 Chinese?

No. 𗠖 belongs to Tangut, a separate historical script for the Tangut language. Tangut characters have a Chinese-inspired square style, but the script is distinct; a Chinese dictionary gloss does not change its identity.

Why is 𗠖 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
