Tangut Ideograph-17815

2070/6136

𗠕 is a character from the historical Tangut script. A Tangut wordbook records the reconstructed reading ²tha₄ as a transliteration sign; that source-specific note is not a universal English gloss.

Text symbol

What 𗠕 means

Its reading depends on the Tangut source.

Unicode’s Tangut source data links 𗠕 to entry L4649 in Li Fanwen’s dictionary. A Tangut wordbook, a reference work for the script, gives the Tangut reading ²tha₄ and labels it a transliteration sign: the character stands for a sound or spelling, not an English meaning. This is a scholarly reconstruction, not a direct translation.

Without the source context, a single English gloss is not reliable. The number in the Unicode label identifies the encoded character; it is not its historical reading.

When was the Tangut script created?

The Tangut script was developed for the Tangut language.

It was created around 1036 under the first emperor of Western Xia. Tangut writing was used from the 11th through 16th centuries for official, private, and religious texts, including books, Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts. After Western Xia fell, use continued under the Yuan and Ming before the script became obsolete.

The script’s creation date does not establish when this individual character first appeared.

Why does 𗠕 show as a box?

The font on your device lacks a Tangut glyph.

Unicode can store 𗠕, but the device’s available font must include a Tangut outline to draw it. Without that support, a browser may show an empty box, a question-mark diamond, or another missing-glyph marker; the character itself has not changed.

Use a font or text renderer with Tangut coverage. In a message, add the source or a short explanation; the glyph alone does not carry a reliable English gloss.

Scholarly and archival; a bare 𗠕 needs source context to convey a reliable reading.

The number in its Unicode label is an identifier, not a translation.
