Tangut Ideograph 17842

𗡂 is a Tangut character, but its dictionary gloss is disputed, so no single English word is safe. It belongs to the script used to write the Tangut language in the Western Xia state.

What 𗡂 means

Its exact word meaning is uncertain. A digitized Tangut word list labels it “who,” but an index to a Tangut dictionary lists that gloss under two different entries. So “who” is not a secure translation.

When was Tangut writing used?

Tangut writing appears around 1036. It served government in the Western Xia state and Buddhist printing. Use continued in religious texts after 1227, and Tangut examples survive from 1502.

Is 𗡂 a Chinese character?

No; it belongs to the separate Tangut script. Tangut glyphs can resemble Chinese writing, but the script was used for Tangut. Visual resemblance alone does not establish that this particular character derives from a Chinese one.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗡂 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
