What 𗢟 means
One Tangut dictionary translates it as “captivation by witchcraft.”
Is 𗢟 Chinese writing?
No. It belongs to a separate script for the Tangut language.
Created around 1036 under Western Xia ruler Li Yuanhao, Tangut writing supported state identity and a Tangut collection of Buddhist scriptures. Its makers adapted Chinese character-building ideas without making the script Chinese; neighboring Khitan peoples, who had developed two scripts about a century earlier, offered a regional precedent. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued into the Yuan and Ming periods in official records, Buddhist texts, law, and literature. Historical sources show variant character shapes; your font draws the on-screen form.
