tangut ideograph-17906

Tangut character

2311/6136

𗤆 is a Tangut-script character; its Unicode label identifies the glyph, not the Tangut word it represented. To read it, you need a Tangut dictionary and usually the line around it. Tangut writing began as an official script for the Western Xia state and Buddhist translation, then carried texts from scripture to law and literature.

What 𗤆 means

The label identifies the glyph; it does not translate it.

“Tangut Ideograph-17906” is a computer label for the encoded glyph, not a Tangut word. A Tangut dictionary gives its reading and meaning; the surrounding line shows which sense fits.

The script's creation is dated to 1036, when Tangut ruler Li Yuanhao ordered it as part of state-building. It gave Western Xia an official script for Tangut and supported Buddhist translation. A manuscript page from the Khara-Khoto ruins, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, shows the script in a secular work too.

Is 𗤆 Tangut or Chinese?

It is a Tangut character, not a Chinese one.

Tangut texts included Buddhist translations from Chinese and Tibetan, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military treatises, law codes, and literature. A Tangut inscription dated 1502 shows that written use continued after the Western Xia period.

Tangut characters were modeled on Chinese writing, and the Western Xia rulers also had an earlier example in the scripts used by the neighboring Khitan people. These are historical links between writing systems.

A lone Tangut glyph reads as historical or specialist material; without a Tangut passage, its meaning is opaque.

Its Chinese-inspired shape does not make it Chinese writing; read it as Tangut.
