tangut ideograph-1790e

Tangut character

2319/6136

𗤎 is a Tangut character; “Tangut Ideograph-1790E” is a code-point label, not its word or reading. Tangut writing was used for the Tangut language in Western Xia (also called Xixia), a state in northern China. This glyph needs a Tangut-capable font to display.

Text symbol

What 𗤎 means

No; it belongs to Tangut writing, a distinct script.

The Western Xia court commissioned the script around 1036 to support a distinct state identity and a collection of Buddhist scriptures in Tangut. Its character shapes and the way characters are built drew on Chinese writing, but the Tangut script did not descend from it. Surviving texts include Buddhist works, translations from Chinese and Tibetan, and works first composed in Tangut.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗤎 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
