Tangut character 𗤜

2333/6136

𗤜 is a character in Tangut, the writing system of the Tangut people; its word value depends on the surrounding text, not its shape. A Tangut rhyming dictionary records it, and scholars reconstruct its sound without supplying an English translation. Sent alone, it is hard to decode without Tangut knowledge.

What 𗤜 means

It represents a Tangut word; context supplies its meaning.

Tangut was the writing system of the Tangut people, who ruled the Western Xia state. It was created by imperial order in 1036 and remained in use through 1036–1502, including after the state fell. The Sea of Writing, a Tangut rhyming dictionary from the 12th century, records 𗤜 at entry 62.171. A Unicode encoding proposal also links it to entry 2747 in a Tangut dictionary published by Li Fanwen in 2008. Scholars reconstruct historical readings for the character; those describe sound, not an English translation. Its documented structure pairs two Tangut components from left to right, not two little pictures.

Why does 𗤜 look like Chinese?

Tangut borrowed Chinese writing conventions, but it is a separate script.

Tangut and Chinese scripts share brush-stroke conventions, but they are mutually illegible. Their forms do not picture the words they represent, so resemblance alone cannot tell you how 𗤜 reads.

Western Xia used Tangut for state writing and to support a Tangut Buddhist canon. The script carried Buddhist scriptures, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military treatises, literature and secular records. Its written role grew beyond state-building into a broad literary and practical script.

Can I send 𗤜 to someone?

Only if they read Tangut or expect a test glyph.

A recipient who does not read Tangut cannot reliably infer the word from its shape; Chinese readers should not treat it as Chinese. If 𗤜 appears as a box, the active font lacks Tangut coverage. That changes the display, not the meaning.

Historical and specialist: in Tangut text it carries a word; outside that setting, it reads as an unfamiliar script character.

Do not read its Chinese-like strokes as Chinese.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𗤜 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
