What 𗤡 means
A Tangut dictionary links it to a surname.
One Tangut dictionary gives it the gloss “surname — yi,” with “yi” written in Latin letters, and compares it with Chinese 个 in a grammatical use. This is a documented comparison between scripts, not an alternate form or evidence that the characters share an origin.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It was created for state writing in the Tangut language.
Around 1036, Western Xia's first emperor commissioned the script for writing Tangut. The state used it for government records, private writing, Buddhist translations, inscriptions, and dictionaries. Its characters have a Chinese-influenced style, but Tangut was a separate language and writing system.
Modern scholarship identifies an official report sent to a military inspector, dated 1072, as the earliest transmitted Tangut document. Tangut writing continued under later dynasties after Western Xia fell; the last known inscription is dated 1502. These dates describe surviving records of the script as a whole, not this character's individual history.
What does 𗤡 mean when someone sends it?
Treat it as Tangut text; one character alone gives little context.
A specialist may consult a Tangut dictionary, while a casual recipient may not recognize the script. As of 2026, it has no established chat-reaction meaning. Use the surrounding text—or ask the sender—before deciding what they intended.
Historical and scholarly; in casual chat it is opaque without context.
A lone glyph does not reveal the sender's intended message.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𗤡 appear as a box?
A font issue. The character is valid text; if an app lacks a Tangut-capable font, it may show a box instead of the glyph. The box indicates a missing font glyph, not another meaning.
