What 𗥼 means
It marks respectful address to an older relative. It comes before a Tangut word for a family relationship; the next character names the relative. That can be a parent or an older sibling.
Historical compounds show the pattern: 𗥼𗴺 means “mother” in respectful family address. The same marker is documented before Tangut words for father, elder brother, and elder sister.
Why was Tangut script created?
It gave the Western Xia kingdom a distinct written system. Created in the 11th-century Western Xia kingdom, Tangut script served government records and translations; using a separate script also signaled Tangut identity. The earliest known surviving Tangut document is dated 1072.
Some Tangut scholars described their script as different in appearance but connected in roots to Chinese writing; scholarship also discusses possible Khitan influence. Surviving records place 𗥼 in family contexts: a memorial inscription uses it in a respectful address, and a household register begins a family entry with it.
Respectful family language in historical Tangut texts; its surviving examples include an inscription and a household register.
By itself it does not name “mother”; the following character gives the family relationship.

1Why is 𗥼 a box?
Usually the font lacks Tangut coverage. If the font supports Tangut but this character still fails, the software may mishandle characters stored as a pair internally; try a Unicode-aware editor.
