3360/6136

In Tangut, 𗴟 has the reconstructed sound value pja¹; that gives a reading, not the meaning of a whole word. It appears in Buddhist transcriptions, including a Tangut rendering of Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ. A font with Tangut coverage is needed to see it.

What 𗴟 means

𗴟 is a Tangut character with the reconstructed sound value pja¹.

Here, pja¹ is the scholarly reconstruction of 𗴟’s sound. It gives a reading, not an English translation; the surrounding Tangut word or passage supplies the meaning.

Tangut writing was created by imperial decree for the Tangut language and was used from 1036–1502. Later, it also carried Buddhist translations and transcriptions of Sanskrit sounds.

Is 𗴟 Chinese?

No. It belongs to Tangut, a separate script.

Tangut has a square, component-based design modeled on Chinese writing, but it records another language in its own script. A Chinese reader cannot sound out 𗴟 as a Han character.

A 2025 study of a Buddhist biography of Atiśa, a Buddhist teacher, records 𗴟 for pja¹ (roughly p-ya) and 𗯸 for a nasalized pa-like syllable, pronounced partly through the nose. On the 1348 Sulaiman Stele, an inscribed standing stone, 𗴟 fills the pja¹ place in a Tangut rendering of Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, a Buddhist mantra in Sanskrit, an ancient South Asian language.

How do I type 𗴟?

Use Unicode input or a Tangut character lookup.

Some input tools may not accept this character, and display requires a font that includes Tangut. A blank box means the font cannot draw it; the stored text can still be the right character.

Specialist and historical: it fits Tangut studies, manuscripts, and Buddhist transcription, not casual modern chat.

Do not present it as Chinese text; visual resemblance does not make the scripts interchangeable.

Why does 𗴟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
