Tangut Ideograph-17A10

2577/6136

𗨐 is a character in the Tangut script; its Unicode label identifies the glyph but does not tell you the word it represented. Tangut was written for the Western Xia state, also called Xixia, and the character appears in Tangut texts and digital study of the script. If it displays as a box, the font may lack Tangut coverage.

What 𗨐 means

It is a Tangut written character; its individual word meaning needs context. The Unicode label identifies the glyph, not the word it represented. A Tangut dictionary entry or the sentence around 𗨐 is needed to establish its reading and meaning.

The Tangut (Xixia) script was created in 1036 by order of Emperor Li Yuanhao, with scholar Yeli Renrong overseeing its development. It served state administration and identity, and carried translations of Buddhist and Chinese works.

How long did Tangut writing last?

It outlasted Western Xia, then left daily writing. Western Xia fell in 1227, but Tangut writing continued for centuries in manuscripts, religious texts, and inscriptions. As of 2026, the latest known examples include Tangut dharani pillars—stone monuments bearing Buddhist sacred formulas—erected in 1502.

That history changes the reading context: in a manuscript, 𗨐 belongs to a Tangut text; in a modern font test or character list, it is a preserved writing-system record. Tangut used a square-block style influenced by Chinese writing without simply deriving from it; its state-script project also had an earlier precedent in the writing system of the Khitan people.

Historical-script use: this belongs in Tangut writing or discussion of the script.

A box is a font clue, not proof that the text is corrupt.
