What 𗨽 means

Its historical meaning depends on Tangut vocabulary and context. The Unicode name identifies this encoded sign; it does not translate the Tangut word it writes. A scholarly reconstruction records the reading in Latin letters as pjar¹. That spelling is a reconstructed reading, not an English gloss.

Where did Tangut script come from?

Tangut script was made for the Western Xia state. Its creation is traditionally dated around 1036, during ruler Li Yuanhao’s effort to build the state’s institutions. Its design drew on Chinese writing and the scripts of the neighboring Khitan people, while remaining a distinct system. One major early project was a Tangut Buddhist canon, a collection of Buddhist writings.

Tangut writing also served Buddhist scriptures, legal and government records, Confucian classics, encyclopedias, military works, and literature. It was used for translations from Chinese and Tibetan, and continued after Western Xia fell.

How do I type this Tangut character?

Use Unicode-aware input and a font with Tangut support. On systems with hexadecimal Unicode entry or code-point search in a character map, enter or search for U17A3D. A box or blank usually means the app or font cannot draw the character; the encoded text can still be present.

Use it in Tangut language or script study, archival transcription, or a script demonstration; it is a historical written character.

Its strokes do not provide a reliable English translation.
