What 𗩴 means
It is glossed “good.” This is a character-level meaning; surrounding Tangut words determine its exact sense in a full passage.
Unicode’s name, TANGUT IDEOGRAPH-17A74, is generated from the code point and identifies the entry, not its meaning. The strokes themselves are not an English translation.
Why was Tangut writing created?
It supported the state, Buddhist texts, and Tangut identity. Around 1036, Tangut emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script as part of state-building; that dates the writing system, not 𗩴’s first appearance. It was probably intended chiefly for a Tangut edition of the Buddhist Canon and a political and cultural identity distinct from Song China.
The Tangut script did not derive from Chinese writing, but Chinese forms and character-building principles inspired it. Tangut rulers also followed the neighboring Khitan example of creating scripts.
A Tangut manuscript fragment found at Khara-Khoto in Inner Mongolia, probably from the 12th or early 13th century, preserves part of a lost Chinese work: short dialogues between Tang emperor Taizong and his ministers. Tangut writing continued under the Yuan and Ming after Western Xia fell, and was obsolete by the end of the Ming dynasty.
Historical and specialist: suited to Tangut texts or discussion of the script.
A blank box means the font lacks Tangut coverage; it is not the character’s shape.
